Number of idle container ships continues to fall
The fleet of idle containerships continues to shrink – today 7.5 per cent of the existing fleet is idle. This is the lowest level of idle tonnage recorded by Alphaliner since the beginning of February 2009. The number of idle ships has fallen across all segments, led by the large containership segment of over 5,000 TEU, which dropped to 37 units compared to 71 units at the beginning of the year.
”Further drops in the idle fleet are expected over the next two months. As the peak season approaches, new service launches, especially on the longhaul trade sectors, may well absorb a significant part of the present-day idle tonnage”, writes Alphaliner.
